The rook is the most powerful piece in Shogi. Like the rooks in Chess it can move any number of squares horizontally.
Upon promotion the rook gains the ability to move one square diagonally in addition to it's regular movements. With great speed and mobility, a promoted rook is easily the most formidable piece you can have.
