Lance - Long range backup
The lance can move any number of squares forward, much like a rook without the ability to move sideways or backwards. The limited movement options combined with starting positions on the sides of the board make the lance a rather weak piece at the beginning of the game.

The lance cannot be dropped onto the final row of the board as it would be left with no legal movements.
Upon promotion, the lance gains the movements of a gold general and loses it's ability to move several squares forward. Under certain conditions it may be preferable to leave the lance unpromoted.
Give it's complete lack of mobility other than attacking forward, the lance is often used as a backup piece to protect another piece further ahead in enemy territory.
